Larn ed D ico u res Intent. The intent of Learned Discourses is to provide a forum for open discussion. These articles reflect the professional opinions of the authors regarding scientific issues. They do not represent SETAC positions or policies. And, although they are subject to editorial review for clarity, consistency, and brevity, these articles are not peer reviewed. The Learned Discourses date from 1996 in the North America SETAC News and, when that publication was replaced by the SETAC Globe, continued there through 2005. The continued success of Learned Discourses depends on our contributors. We encourage timely submissions that will inform and stimulate discussion. We expect that many of the articles will address controversial topics, and promise to give dissenting opinions a chance to be heard. Rules. All submissions must be succinct: no longer than 1,000 words, no more than 6 references, and at most one table or figure. Reference format must follow the journal requirement found on the Internet at http:// www.setacjournals.com. Topics must fall within IEAM’s sphere of interest. Submissions. All manuscripts should be submitted online at http:// ieam.allentrack.net. Alternatively, submissions can be sent via email as Word attachments to Peter M Chapman ([email protected]) or to IEAM ([email protected]). Timely Scientific Opinions In a Nutshell... A thermodynamic approach for assessing the environmental exposure of chemicals absorbed to microplastic.
The environmental distribution and fate of microplastic in the marine environment represents a potential cause of concern. One aspect is the influence that microplastic may have on enhancing the transport and bioavailability of persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic substances (PBT). In this study we assess these potential risks using a thermodynamic approach, aiming to prioritize the physicoch...
متن کاملSusceptibility of Sardinella lemuru to emerging marine microplastic pollution
Marine microplastics are emerging pollutants that impact across levels of marine food chain at a global scale. Its presence was determined on Sardinella lemuru, a commercial pelagic fish that are harvested generally in the Northern Mindanao, consumed locally, and exported worldwide as bottled or canned sardine products. The stomach contents of 600 sardines were examined visually under...
متن کاملThe Investigation of Microplastic Particles in Khor-e-Musa in Persian Gulf Sediments
One of the recently considered pollutants is microplastic particles. To investigate this contaminant, 15 samples of sediment were sampled from Khor-e-Musa estuary. Samples were transferred to the laboratory in thick plastic bags for extraction and counting of microplastic particles. H2O2 was first used to remove organic matter in the samples. Then, using the condensation separation method, the ...
متن کاملAbundance and characteristics of microplastics in beach sediments: Insights into microplastic accumulation in northern Gulf of Mexico estuaries.
Microplastics (plastic debris smaller than 5mm) represent a growing concern worldwide due to increasing amounts of discarded trash. We investigated microplastic debris on sandy shorelines at seven locations in a northern Gulf of Mexico estuary (Mobile Bay, AL) during the summer of 2014. Microplastics were ubiquitous throughout the area studied at concentrations 66-253× larger than reported for ...
متن کاملSources and sinks of microplastics in Canadian Lake Ontario nearshore, tributary and beach sediments.
Microplastics contamination of Lake Ontario sediments is investigated with the aim of identifying distribution patterns and hotspots in nearshore, tributary and beach depositional environments. Microplastics are concentrated in nearshore sediments in the vicinity of urban and industrial regions. In Humber Bay and Toronto Harbour microplastic concentrations were consistently >500 particles per k...
